What should you expect from an MBA curriculum?

Education today has generally became career oriented, especially for those who know what they want from their life and if it matches their interest and passion. Students with sharp business acumen, i.e. aptitude for business and logical reasoning are thus looking forward to securing profiles which can use their skills and offer them a lucrative career. Management degrees today have come to promise exactly that. An MBA program with a reputed business school that also has a great placement record to flaunt almost guarantees a bright and secure future.

Whatever you were doing before an MBA, the degree would only enhance your exposure and experience, taking you a notch up in your career graph. However, for that to happen students are suggested to have realistic expectations depending upon his calibre and the college / university he chooses to pursue the post-graduation degree course. A lot also depends on the specialization students pick up during their second year of MBA, because debut salary can be misguiding and individual performance has a lot to make up for many aspects over the years of job after MBA.

Given below are some key points to initiate in an MBA program in some of the top colleges.

It's all about focus
Once the students are through with the initial rush of filling forms, giving entrance exams, selecting colleges and giving interview, they think that they can rest for a while after getting admitted in the college. This is when they can lose their focus.

An MBA course structure is generally all encompassing thus never to be considered a child's play; there's a long way to go from being just an MBA student to a Manager on whom a business / company can rely. Two years of the course would fly away in a blink if the student is dedicating this time to imbibe more managerial qualities and enhancing his core skills. Staying up to date about the domestic as well as global economy, keeping an eye on the market trends, knowing about the successful business people across the world are just few of the things one can begin with, requiring complete dedication till the end of the program.

Specialization: Choose wisely
After a common understanding of business subjects in the first year of the MBA program, the second year demands more attention on specific subjects, which are termed specializations. Since these specific subjects are going to decide the course of your career, these must be opted with many things on mind.

There could be niche specializations like IT, Business Analytics, PR & Advertising, Retail, etc. and there are those broader and more popular ones like Marketing, Finance and HR. So it is very important to gauge the depth of the subject and your personal bent of mind and how far are you willing to go with that subject. Only then you would be able to make a right decision and do not commit the mistake of following friends into a subject; you will only regret it when it's too late to go back.
